OUR MISSION

While meeting readers on tour for our novels THE PERSONAL LIBRARIAN and THE FIRST LADIES, we began to notice something very curious. People asked nearly as many questions about our friendship as they did about the incredible historical women upon whom we focused. Readers seemed fascinated with how we became so close during our writing process. They wanted to know more about the frank and difficult conversations we had — as a Black and a white woman — writing about historical racial issues during the current unrest in our country.

Once we overcame our surprise, we recognized that the men and women we were meeting, had a hunger to make similar connections. And after thinking about this, we realized fiction was a great space for these connections and discussions to happen.

Conversations in Black and White is designed to provide readers from different backgrounds with the means and materials to connect with others. Through the safe space of historical fiction, we hope to foster many conversations that will lead not only to greater understanding, but also to new connections between readers.
